Racism in English Football ?

11:08 PM 05 MAR 2011

In March 8th 2002 many black english footballers complained about the fact that there were basically no black coachs in the football teams. Because of this lack of equals in the “manager´s office” , several black football players hired John Mehri, responsible for placing African Americans as coachs in the NFL.

“When we started in 2002, there were one or two black head coaches of the 32 in the Premier League” said Mehri, distinguished American lawyer. “Now there are eight. That came about because of the [changed] interview process. The general managers at the Premier League clubs went from one to five”. This is no mere coincidence; success followed.

The 2007 Premier League teams, West Ham and Manchester United, had black head coaches (respectively Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith). “That was historic’’ said Mehri “I was very proud”.That’s a message of hope and empowerment.
